Aaron Ramsey becomes Wales' captain following Gareth Bale's retirement
The five-time Champions League winner Gareth Bale announced his retirement from football in January after spending his last season at MLS with LAFC. Aaron Ramsey will succeed him as the Wales captain.
Gareth Bale won 111 caps with Wales, breaking the record for their all-time appearance. After leading his side into their first World Cup campaign since 1958 in Qatar last year, the Welshman decided to hang up his boots. Bale will be succeeded by the former Arsenal and Juventus midfielder, Aaron Ramsey. Rob Page made the announcement ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Croatia and Latvia. Jordan James, Ollie Cooper, Luke Harris, and Nathan Broadhead all have been called up for the first time.
After struggling in Juventus, Ramsey had a frustrating loan spell at Rangers last season. He joined the Ligue 1 side Nice on a free transfer last August. Since then, he has made 21 league appearances. He previously captained the team in 2011 as he was named skipper by Gary Speed. However, Chris Coleman decided to hand the armband to Ashley Williams in 2012.
Bale won 5 Champions League titles, 3 La Liga titles, 3 Club World Cups, a Copa del Rey with Real Madrid as well as a League Cup with Tottenham. The Welshman also scored 186 goals and recorded 139 assists during 554 competitive matches at the highest level, making him one of the most decorated and influential players of the last decade.
