Juventus legend Del Piero reveals Ferguson tried to sign him for Manchester United twice

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to sign him for Manchester United.

Del Piero played with

Juventus

shirt for 19 years, until 2012. He managed to score 290 goals in 705 matches for the Italian side.

Former Juventus star who is working as a pundit for Sky Sports Italia, revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson was interested in signing him and Paul Maldini for

Manchester United.

“Yes, he did. I can confirm that,”

said Del Piero.

“Before 2000, but actually even afterward. But don’t let me say any more then, if not…”

Former successful Italian manager Fabio Capello, who is a regular pundit on Sky Sports Italia, also revealed that he was close to replacing Ferguson as Manchester United manager.

He said:

“There’s another one. His son and agent came to visit me in Rome, we almost reached an agreement. When I returned home, I saw Ferguson had been confirmed there for three more years.

“In the morning he called me and said: ‘I am sorry Fabio, my wife wants me to work, she doesn’t want me at home, sorry, sorry’.”

Ferguson was set to retire in 2002, but in the end, he changed his mind and continued his coaching career until 2013. Fabio Capello who has managed teams like Real Madrid, Juventus, Roma, Milan, and England's national team in his career won more than 10 major trophies including the Champions League with Milan in 1994.
