Former Barcelona player and Marcos Alonso's father dies aged 63

Known as Marcos during his playing days, the former Barcelona and Spain winger Marcos Alonso Pena passed away aged 63.

The former winger played for

Barcelona

between 1982 and 1987 as well as making 22 appearances for his national team.

, the father of the current Blaugrana's left-back, also had spells with Racing Santander and Atletico Madrid.

Confirming his death in a statement, the Catalan club wrote:

"FC Barcelona would like to express its deepest condolences for the passing of former Barca player Marcos Alonso Pena.

"All of our strength to Marcos Alonso and his entire family. Rest in peace."

Marcos followed his father's footsteps, Marquitos, a former Real Madrid defender, in becoming a professional football player as he made his debut with Racing in 1977. He arrived at Barca in 1982 and won La Liga and Copa del Rey in his five-year spell with the club before joining

Atletico

in 1987. After a brief spell at Logrones, Pena retired at his homeboy club, Racing.

To honor his death, a minute of silence was held at Joan Laporta's press conference on Wednesday.
