Ronald Koeman believes Cody Gakpo moved too early to Liverpool

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman says Cody Gakpo might have made the move to the Premier League too early in his career.

Gakpo

joined

Liverpool

from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth £37m last January. The Dutch forward has not scored for Liverpool yet, and they have failed to win in any of his six appearances.

Th new Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman who replaced Louis Van Gaal after the World Cup, believes Gakpo has joined a big club like Liverpool too early in his career.

"The level in England is higher than in the Netherlands, but they are also young boys, aren't they? Like [Ryan] Gravenberch going to Bayern and not playing. Then that is difficult.”

Koeman said on a YouTube show hosted by former footballer Andy van der Meyde.

The former Barcelona manager also said the fact that Liverpool is struggling this season had made Gakpo's job more difficult.

"You can see that, that he [Gakpo] has ended up in a team that is not doing well. Then it becomes more difficult for him, as a new signing. You are tested right away. And if you don't score or you're not important and you don't win any matches, it's very difficult, especially for a young player. If that's was someone aged 28 with experience, it would be different.”

The 23-year-old Gakpo scored 55 goals in 159 matches for PSV. He also has scored 6 goals for the Netherlands, including three goals at the 2022 World Cup.

The

Netherlands

faces France and Gibraltar in the Euro-2024 qualifiers in March.
