"We would like to have Messi one day", says Saudi football chief

The general secretary of the Saudi Football Federation insists there are no ongoing negotiations between a Saudi Arabian team and Lionel Messi.

After

Cristiano Ronaldo

joined Saudi side Al-Nassr last month on a reported £175million-a-year contract until 2025, reports have suggested that another Saudi side Al-Hilal wants to sign

Lionel Messi

on a £246million-a-year contract.

The General Secretary of the Saudi Football Federation, Ibrahim Alkassim, has denied these reports but insisted that they like to see Messi play in the Saudi league in the future.

"At the moment we do not know anything about a possible Lionel Messi arrival, although I do not hide that, as Saudi Federation, we would like to have him one day in the domestic league,"

Alkassim told MARCA.

"The idea of the Federation is always to improve our football, and of course we would like to see Cristiano and Messi in the same league again, but the truth is that we don't know anything now.”

Messi and Ronaldo faced each other in a friendly match last week in Saudi Arabia, which ended with a 3-2 victory for PSG. Messi scored one goal and Ronaldo managed to score two goals.

Messi who joined

Paris Saint Germain

in 2021 will be a free agent at the end of the season and has been linked with MLS side Inter Miami, but he also has received a contract extension offer from PSG, and talks are reportedly advanced between both parties.

The 35-year-old Messi who won the 2022 World Cup has scored 24 goals in 55 matches for PSG.
