Akanji fuming at VAR’s ‘joke’ decision to rule United’s first goal onside

The Swiss center back is adamant that Fernandes’ goal against City should’ve been ruled offside.

Manuel Akanji described VAR’s decision to let

United

’s equalizer against City as a “joke”. Guardiola’s men were set to get the 3 points with a goal from Grealish but Fernandes’ much-discussed equalizer sent the match into another direction culminating in Citizens losing a crucial derby amidst intense title race.

"For me, the first goal is a joke that it's going to be allowed like this,"

Manuel Akanji

told the BBC.

"In that situation, I see Rashford is clearly offside, so I play him offside. He runs really to the last second and he stops when the ball is in front of him.

"He's right in front of Edi [Ederson] to score the goal and then he stops because Bruno is calling him from behind that he [Fernandes] is not in an offside position.

"I understand that he doesn't touch the ball, but he runs for like 30 metres, he's chasing the ball and then he stops. For me, it's clearly offside."

United now move with a point of Manchester City and 6 behind league leaders who have a Derby of their own tomorrow and whether this goal proves crucial in the title race remains to be seen.
