Ten Hag confirms Manchester United is close to signing Wout Weghorst

After Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, Manchester United wants to sign a striker in the January transfer window as the Besiktas striker emerged as a candidate to replace the Portuguese icon at Old Trafford.

Wout Weghorst

is currently on loan at Besiktas and

Manchester United

is waiting for Burnley to reach an agreement with Besiktas to cut Weghorst's loan short. Weghorst’s contract with Besiktas must be terminated before he can sign a contract with Man United.

It was reported on Thursday that United has reached an agreement to pay the Turkish club £2.5m to take over their loan arrangement. The Dutch striker has scored eight Super Lig goals in 16 games this season.

Ahead of the Manchester Derby,

Erik Ten Hag

told reporters:

"I think we are close, so he will not be available for tomorrow, no

."

The former Ajax boss confirmed the Dutch striker won’t arrive in time to face Manchester City. He added:

"Weghorst wasn't available in the last weeks, so it would be a bonus if he was [able to face City]. I hope soon he will be there.”

Asked to provide injury updates on Antony Martial and Diogo Dalot, the Dutch coach added:

"[Diogo] Dalot is not available, and Martial trained this morning, so we wait to see how he recovered and if he's available. That will be decided tomorrow.

"It's a small thing, in his leg, so I will be [waiting for] tomorrow, otherwise he'll be available for Wednesday, I think.

"But also we have had a month of winning a lot of games without Anthony Martial."
