South Korea 2–1 Portugal: A late winner to ruin Uruguay's victory

Portugal and South Korea faced each other in their last group game of their Qatar 2022 campaign in completely different situations. While Portugal had already been qualified for the next round winning all of their group matches, the Koreans needed more than a victory to qualify.

Winning all of their Group H games,

Portugal

was topping the group with 6 points, followed by 3-pointed Ghana who was facing Uruguay in the other game of the group as the Uruguayans suffered a disappointing start to the tournament, only gathering a draw from

South Korea

.

Meanwhile, Ghana's victory over the Koreans gave the African leverage to qualify as the group runner-up. However, it wasn’t the first World Cup the Koreans pulled up a miracle as they were eager to push their chances.

Portugal started taking possession and as early as 5th-minute they scored the opener through

Ricardo Horta

who nodded in Diogo Dalot's cross. South Korea tried to drift the game wide and finally scored the equalizer through Young-Gwon Kim in the 27th minute after Ronaldo failed to clear a corner.

After a long resistance from Portugal, Hee-Chan Hwang made it 2-1 for the Koreans in the 91st minute as they proceeded to the next level as the group runner-ups behind Portugal, eliminating Uruguay despite their victory over Ghana.
