Messi the hero again as Argentina secures crucial win over Mexico

Even though it got nervy at times for Argentina, Leo Messi comes to the rescue again with a goal and an assist to revitalize Argentina’s World Cup hopes.

Things looked dire for Lionel Scaloni following their surprise loss to Saudi Arabia in the opening match. However, Lionel Messi once again became the hero as Argentina managed to get a 2-0 win.

Although the result may seem like Argentina won the game comfortably, it was far from the case since the two teams didn’t generate much threat throughout the game.

Argentina

’s nerves did come through in the first half as Scaloni’s men seemed nervous with the threat of being eliminated hanging over them.

Mexico

’s biggest chance in the match came just before the half-time when Alexis Vega’s free-kick forced Emiliano Martinez into a brilliant save.

However, Argentina came into their own in the second half and finally an inspired long-range effort from Lionel Messi opened their account. The captain’s goal galvanized Argentina to get back into their rhythm and they were able to capitalize by an excellent Enzo Fernandez shot from a Lionel Messi assist.

Messi’s 2nd World Cup goal now takes him to a total of 8 goals at the tournament as he reaches Maradona’s record. Argentina now move into their third game against Poland needing a win to qualify.
