Villarreal appoint Setien after Emery's departure

Villarreal has appointed Quique Setien as their new head coach following Unai Emery's decision to leave for Aston Villa.

Setien was Barcelona’s manager for seven months and was sacked following an 8-2 Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich in 2020. He has been out of work since then and has signed a contract with Villarreal until the end of next season.

"Setien is distinguished by his good football and passing game which he has displayed at the teams he has coached through his extensive top-level career,"

said Villarreal in a statement.

Villarreal is in seventh place in La Liga. They only have won five of their 11 games this season. Setien's first game as Villarreal’s manager will be Thursday's Europa Conference League match with Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

On Monday, Unai Emery announced that he has decided to leave Villarreal to replace Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. Emery won the Europa League with Villarreal in 2021 and took the team to the Champions League semi-final last season.

"When you take these decisions you have to be cold and calculating, and stick to the contracts that we sign,"

Emery told reporters on Tuesday.

"I have the maturity and experience to take decisions firmly and with respect.

"I have been myself here. They gave me the conditions to be myself, at my best version. You must keep having challenges, I had a home at Villarreal.

"I called Fernando (Roig, the president), on Friday to tell him the situation and that I wanted to be in charge for Sunday's game and on Monday we would meet. Yesterday it all happened.”

Emery said.
