Gakpo admits disappointment in failing to join Man Utd

Cody Gakpo admitted that he was disappointed that his switch to Manchester United in the last transfer window stalled in the end.

Cody Gakpo

was linked with a move to Manchester United but his transfer to the Premier League did not materialize and the player said that it was “a shame” that it didn’t happen as the Red Devils are “one of the biggest” clubs in the world.

The 23-year-old attracted the attention of Erik ten Hag’s side when the tactician joined the Old Trafford. However, the player’s pursuit was stalled in the end and the Netherlands international remained put at PSV Eindhoven. He has now talked about the situation, saying that he negotiated with Ten Hag, while also revealing how stressful the time was for him.

"I was close to leaving, I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United,"

Gakpo told

The Times

.

"In the end, the deal didn't go through.

"[It] was a shame, for me and my development, and because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world. Also, [it was a shame] for PSV, because to transfer a player to Manchester United is a good thing for the club.

"It ended about a week before the end of the transfer window and in that week I had to decide if I would go to Leeds or Southampton. In the end I stayed, but it was a stressful period."

Despite all the speculations and rumors, Gakpo kept his fine performance and met the target nine times, contributing seven assists in 10 matches for his side this season. However, he has not ruled out a move to the Premier League.

"I always said if I stay here, it's my childhood club. It's not a punishment,"

he added.

"I like being here, I want to win trophies here and do my best for the club.

"But if I got the chance to go to the Premier League or something, of course I would have to consider that option. At that time, it was hectic for me, but I recovered pretty quickly."
