Conte on benching Matt Doherty: "I am not seeing him in the right way"
Even though Matt Doherty was Antonio Conte's first choice last season, he has been criticized by the manager for falling short of expectations this year.
has only made three appearances in 2022-23, despite being Conte's first choice for his right wing-back position last season. Many believe that the competition, Emerson Royal, is not significantly superior to the Republic of Ireland international.
During a press conference,
Antonio Conte
told reporters:
"Doherty last season played every game, and now I am not seeing him in the right way to start games. I am not stupid. I don't want to lose."
Doherty entered the game against Arsenal in the second half after Emerson was sent off for his first Premier League appearance of the season. He has clearly fallen out of favor with the Italian manager, as he has made only substitute appearances in the Champions League.
Doherty will attempt to re-establish himself in Conte's good graces and return to the first team now that his primary rival has been suspended. Emerson is not suspended for the Champions League, so he may have to wait until the Premier League match against Brighton to demonstrate his abilities.
