Infantino expressed condolences after Indonesia football disaster

Anti-riot police clashed with the riot of supporters, causing many of them to die.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has expressed his condolences after 174 people were killed during a match in the Indonesian Premier League.

Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya played against each other last night and after the defeat of host Arema FC, the fans rushed into the field. Clashes between fans and riot police led to the firing of tear gas, and the stampede to leave the stadium resulted in many deaths. According to the police, 3,000 of the 40,000 fans entered the field, and at least 130 of them were killed, but reports indicate that the death toll will be higher.

Infantino's statement reads:

"The football world is in a state of shock following the tragic incidents that have taken place in Indonesia.

"This is a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives following this tragic incident.

"Together with FIFA and the global football community, all our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, those who have been injured, together with the people of the Republic of Indonesia, the Asian Football Confederation, the Indonesian Football Association, and the Indonesian Football League, at this difficult time."
