When asked if domestic teams saw Newcastle as a threat, the manager of Newcastle gave his opinion. "I would say that's true," he said. "That's something we felt in the market. The clubs at home didn't want to look like they were helping us. We'll have to do that because that's where we are now.

"We have found that no one there is willing to help us. It's how people talk about us that has changed. If there's something at home, teams will charge more if it's Newcastle. That happens everywhere, and we have to deal with it. Howe said that his side spent more than they wanted to and that financial fair play made it very hard.

"FFP was a big problem for us this transfer window," he said. "We've looked over the rules that were given. I don't know if it will affect future budgets, and it's not up to me to say. But we are a little further along than we wanted to be."
