Spain's Putellas injured her knee ahead of the European Championship

The 2020-21 Ballon d’Or winner has reportedly injured her knee ahead of the women's European Championship, the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

Last week Alexia Putellas became the first

Spain women's national team

footballer to reach 100 caps for her country after featuring in Spain's friendly with Italy on Friday. However, La Roja suffers a blow as the midfielder reportedly injured her knee in training.

RFEF said in a statement:

"Alexia Putellas suffered a sprain in her left knee during the training session of the Spanish women's national team. Medical tests will determine the extent of the injury."

Begining their group stage campaign against Finland on Friday, Spain is one of the favorites to lift the Euros.

was named last year’s female player of the year as she was at the heart of the Barcelona team which won the Spanish league and reached the finals of the Champions League, scoring 11 Champions League and 18 La Liga goals. She enjoyed a global reputation with Spain's junior national sides, having won UEFA Women's U-17 Euros in 2010 and 2011, and coming second in the 2012 UEFA Women's U-19 Euro. She made her senior national team debut in 2012 and has since competed in three major international tournaments with the squad, including Spain's Women's World Cup start in 2015, the 2017 UEFA Women's Euro, and the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. She also has been named the best female European player for the 2020-2021 season.
