Birmingham City Sacks Lee Bowyer Despite Avoiding Relegation

At a time when the club's owners are seeking to sell up, the owners of the club decided to terminate Bowyer’s contract ahead of the coming season.

Steering the club to safety after his appointment in March 2020, Bowyer once again saved

Birmingham

from relegation by a 20th-place finish. However, he leaves St Andrew's after 16 months on the job.

Although the former Watford owner Laurence Bassini had been in talks over a deal for the club, he missed several deadlines as his period of exclusivity has expired. However, one of his intentions was to replace Bowyer if he took over the club.

A club statement said:

"The board of directors believe this to be the necessary course of action and have acted swiftly ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. The board would like to place on record their sincere thanks to Lee for all of his efforts during his time at the club.”

Bowyer

also served the club as a player for two years from 2009. The statement adds:

"As a player and as a head coach, Lee's commitment and dedication was never in question and we will always be thankful for his contribution both on the pitch and in the dugout.

"He will always be welcomed back to St Andrew's.  A replacement head coach and support staff will be confirmed in due course."

After the end of the 2021-22 Championship campaign, Bowyer was ambitious about the future. However, his job didn’t last as long as his ambitions.
