Sergio Ramos Ballon d’Or 2020 Scandal Revealed by Audio Leaks

As an audio file which was recorded between July and August of 2020, shortly after Madrid won La Liga, then captain of Real Madrid, asked Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Football Federation, for help in winning the Ballon d’Or in the summer of 2020.

Although the Ballon d'Or award was eventually canceled in 2020 because of the Covid pandemic, months before its confirmation the

Real Madrid

legend evidently asked Spanish Football Federation to use his power to grant him the Ballon d’Or award.

As the audios leaked by

Mundo Deportivo

reveal, Ramos has been recorded saying to Rubiales:

“You know that I’ve never asked you for anything but if I want to do it today it’s because I think this has been a special year for the performances I’ve delivered.

“I would like you to help me in whatever way you can and use your connections at UEFA linked to the Ballon d’Or. I would be grateful to you all my life, not only for me but also because I think Spanish football deserves it very much.”

Rubiales responds in the leaked audio file that while winning the Ballon d’Or doesn’t depend on him, he is willing to help Ramos out in any way that he can as he believes the Andalusian deserves to win the Ballon d’Or and wished him well in the Champions League campaign that was about to take place.

The 35-year-old was signed on a free transfer by PSG last summer. As he has struggled with injuries throughout his debut season at Parc des Princes. Even though

Ramos

only played four games for Real Madrid in the six months leading up to his departure owing to a series of fitness difficulties, PSG decided to sign him to a two-year contract.
