Mourinho discusses Roma's revival, and how he's changed as a coach

Try saying that to Roma fans enjoying their first European victory in 61 years.

From Tirana to Rome, fans were ecstatic. Remarkably, the same coach won Italy's first European trophy in a decade. In 2010, he won the Champions League with Inter. The win over

Feyenoord

in

Albania

was his first prize in five years, but it could have come sooner if

Tottenham

hadn't fired him before a cup final.

That may explain why he cried after winning his fifth European final. In this interview with Sky Sports, he'll discuss what drives him as he nears 60 and how he's had to adapt to achieve again. First, discuss the motive. He tells Sky Sports, "It's my nature."

"It's in a long-term football player's nature. If you're not passionate about football and you've accomplished everything, quit and enjoy your medals. You're happy outside football. Football fans don't want to quit playing. Football fans don't feel old. You feel young until your dying day. So, motivation is genetic. Some of his comments show old belligerence. Is it wicked to think he might have specific contemporaries in mind when questioned about his titles in Portugal,

England

, Italy, and Spain?

"I won early in these four countries. I didn't need 3-4-5 years to win. Soon. Season 1 or 2. I attempted to understand the team. Studying I tried to make the most of the distinctions by implementing my own ideas while respecting local customs and, in my case, the local approach to the game."

Perhaps there's a fresh openness to change. "2000's young man is different from 2022's," he says. It feels more like a challenge to be accepted than a lament for what was lost. Leadership matters. "Changes in leadership emphasize participation. People follow leaders. They must trust you to follow you. If people feel empathy and honesty, they'll trust you.

"As a leader, that means not letting people down. They need you always. Trust them." This was a concern when Mourinho joined

Roma

last summer. Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were senior players at Manchester United. There were rumors of a rocky relationship. Any worries disappeared. Mourinho's appointment was well-received.

Lorenzo Pellegrini

said the club was hit by lightning. Mourinho's proposals were welcomed.

"Everyone has a unique manner of communicating, giving criticism, and motivating. Knowing their nature is crucial. You can virtually engage individually with them. It's like ordering a la carte at a French restaurant. The player is 'a la carte'. They're all distinct, so don't compare them."

He's not a natural leader, perhaps shockingly. He says, "No." "I was a young silent leader. My job doesn't let me lead quietly, as is my nature. Always being in the public light and communicating through media makes a tremendous difference."

He's a natural leader. When Mourinho had early success as a manager, Vitor Frade's methods and theories about tactical periodization were widely disseminated. His impact has made it harder to gain a competitive edge. Nope. "Since 1990, the game has altered. We have new training and technique tools for analyzing a game from the bench.

"Today, I have a monitor with a tactical camera that was outlawed 20 years ago and gives us varied pitch perspectives. New coaches emerged. Now that there are numerous specialists, you can split the work. Not so. "Previously, you only had a fitness coach. Performance coach, recovery coach, individual coach, and preventative coach. Irrational. It's transformed our work.

"You're dealing with so many characters and egos now. You must also handle additional information. We can't handle everything, so I have to prioritize. "It's like Formula 1 teams. They must be selective with their data during the race. They can't give the driver everything." The game's goal hasn't altered. First, cross. Triumph. European football's most famous winner, a guy once synonymous with triumph, is still competing.
