Athletic boss Marcelino confirms his departure from the LaLiga club

After Marcelino announced his departure,

will be looking for a new head coach for next season.

On January 3, 2021, Marcelino took over as president of the Basque side. Later that month, he led Athletic to the Supercopa de Espana victory.

Athletic also reached the final of the competition in 2021-22, but lost to Real Madrid, while Marcelino, an ex-Villarreal and Valencia boss, managed two Copa del Rey final losses, one of which was postponed owing to the coronavirus epidemic.

Marcelino's team reached the

semi-finals this season, eliminating both Barcelona and Real Madrid, but they were defeated in the final by Valencia over two legs.

The 56-year-contract old's will not be extended when it ends at the end of June. He guided Athletic to eighth rank in the 2021-22 

standings, following a tenth-place finish the previous season.

Marcelino was in charge of 59 league matches, winning 19 (32.2%) and losing 17, with his club scoring 70 goals and ceding 59, averaging 1.36 points per match.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Marcelino said:

"We believe the time has come to step aside and bring an end to a beautiful story. We're proud to have had the privilege of coaching Athletic Club.

"Thank you to everyone, I wish you all the success in the future. This is not a goodbye. You will always be in our hearts. Always.

"Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to the fans. We were orphans while the pandemic attacked us. Then I found out what it really means to be at San Mames as Athletic's coach.

"We have had some magical nights and unforgettable moments."
