Liverpool keen to sign Carvalho in summer after missing Jan deadline

Liverpool are optimistic about finalizing a pre-contract deal to recruit Fulham midfielder Fabio Carvalho as a free agent this summer.

On Monday, Jurgen Klopp's team missed the deadline to sign the starlet and loan him back to Fulham for the remainder of the season.

Carvalho will now complete the remaining six months of his agreement at Craven Cottage, but talks between Liverpool and the

Championship

club will continue as they try to agree on wages. A commission will set a sum if they don't, similar to how

Harvey Elliot

's transfer from Craven Cottage to Anfield in 2019 was handled.

On Deadline Day, Liverpool came close to sealing the 19-year-old's deal but were unsuccessful in completing and submitting the requisite papers in time.

The Championship team demanded a hefty transfer price for Carvalho, as well as him remaining at the club for the remainder of the season.

Although it looked that Liverpool had accomplished those requirements, Carvalho's move to Anfield and his temporary return to Fulham had to be finalized before the deadline, which was eventually not conceivable.

The Reds were one of several teams interested in Carvalho, who is likely to depart Fulham when his contract expires in the summer.

Should the Portuguese teenager join another English club at the conclusion of his agreement, the club would be eligible to receive compensation calculated by a tribunal, whereas continental teams would just be required to pay a minimal sum.

Carvalho made his first-team debut for Fulham last season and has since established himself in the Championship, scoring seven goals and assisting four times in 18 games.

Fulham manager

Marco Silva

said last week that Carvalho would not leave the club this month, even though it may be his last chance to obtain a transfer price.

"Fabio will be with us until the end of the season," Silva said. "I would like to see him here for more years.

"From day one I have been trying to keep him. It is not a surprise that clubs are interested in Fabio. We are talking about a young player with big talent.

"The situation is not easy because he is in the last year of his contract, but that is the reality. It is out of our plans for him to leave the club in this window.

"It has been difficult for us to renew with him, but we are trying.

"It is always difficult with a player of this talent - even with a contract it is difficult to keep him, and without it is even worse. But Fabio will be with us until the end of this season."
