12 Covid cases in Comoros squad ahead of their AFCON round of 16 match

Before their round of 16 match against Cameroon, 12 Covid-19 instances were detected among the Comoros national team roster, comprising their three goalies.

In their

AFCON

debut, Comoros were the tournament's biggest underdogs after defeating

Ghana

3-2 in the last group stage match and advanced as one of the top third-placed teams.

The Coelacanths are set to meet hosts and Group A toppers Cameroon in the round of 16 on Monday, but they have been dealt a major setback ahead of the match.

Five outfield players, including Nakibou Aboubakari, Yacine Bourhane, forward Mohamed M'Changama, and defenders Kassim Abdallah and Alexis Souahy, tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday, according to Comoros national team executive manager El Hadad Hamidi.

Two of the team's shot-stoppers contracted the COVID-19, while the third, Salim Ben Boina, is already unavailable due to injury. Amir Abdou, the head coach, has also tested positive.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regulations, if a team has 11 players available, they must play the match, regardless of their position. As a result, Comoros may have to use an outfield player as a goalie.
