Benfica defender Nicolas Otamendi victim of violent robbery

Benfica center-back Nicolas Otamendi was the victim of a violent assault at his home in Portugal on Monday morning.

Four men broke in and assaulted the former

Manchester City

defender in front of his family before stealing money and watches in Aroeira, Almada.

The incident took place after the Argentine returned home following

Benfica

’s 4-1 victory over

Famalicao

in the Primeira Liga.

Despite the horrific experience, the player, his wife, and their son are in good health, according to Benfica.

A statement from Benfica read:

"Benfica confirms that their player Nico Otamendi was the victim of a robbery at his home during the early hours of today.

"The athlete and the family are doing well, despite the enormous discomfort caused by the situation they are experiencing.

"Sport Lisboa e Benfica calls for the privacy of the player and his family to be respected by all the media, while awaiting the conduct of investigations initiated by the authorities."

Otamendi won two Premier League titles with City in his five seasons at the Etihad Stadium before he joined the Portuguese giants in September 2020.

The 33-year-old won the Copa America with Argentina in July.
