"We stand behind Timo" Gnabry backs Werner amid criticism

The Chelsea forward missed several chances in Die Mannschaft’s game against Romania.

Germany defeated Romania 2-1 in a hard-fought match on Saturday. Two goals from Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller were enough for the Germans to come back from behind after conceding an early goal.

Timo Werner was given a place in Die Mannschaft’s starting line-up, but the Chelsea forward struggled to convert multiple chances throughout the World Cup qualifier. The underwhelming performances of Werner have generated widespread criticism toward him, but Gnabry says his countryman should be given time to find his best form.

"We know there are periods when a striker doesn't always score,"

Gnabry said post-match.

"Then, there's criticism, but we stand behind Timo.

"He did a good job in the last game; he missed a little bit of luck, but he's giving everything, and that's the most important thing.

"Timo is not [Robert] Lewandowski and not a classical striker, but he also has his qualities; he's quick and can also score goals."

Werner has started three games for Chelsea in their current Premier League campaign, scoring one goal and providing one assist. The under-fire forward's game time has been limited with the arrival of Romelu Lukaku this season, generating rumors around his potential departure from the club. Bayern Munich, who were linked with Werner during his time at RB Leipzig, have emerged as a serious suitor for the 25-year-old as he continues to struggle at Stamford Bridge.
