Waldschmidt eyes Mannschaft return after Wolfsburg move

The former Freiburg striker has returned to Bundesliga after spending a short spell at Benfica.

Luca Waldschmidt

joined Wolfsburg on a €12m deal this summer as he ended his one-year stay at Benfica. The former Freiburg striker will further improve Wolfsburg’s firepower, with Die Wolfe already enjoying the deadly trio of

Ridle Baku

,

Renato Steffen

, and

Wout Weghorst

upfront.

“I really wanted to return to the Bundesliga, to this platform.”

the 25-year-old told

Kicker

. “

Of course, it wasn't that easy in Portugal, being in a new country, away from family and friends. Corona made it even more difficult. I couldn't really get to know the beautiful city,

"We traveled a lot with Benfica and played several games almost every week from August to February without a winter break. It was all about playing, regenerating and traveling.”

Waldschmidt was called up to the national team in October 2019. Having made seven appearances for Die Mannschaft, the Wolfsburg striker hopes to find his place in Hansi Flick’s squad.

He added:

"Another argument for returning to Germany was to be in the spotlight a bit more again. It's my goal to get back to the national team. Everyone who has done so wants to do it again. The last contact was with Jogi Low, when he told me that I wouldn't be going to the Euros."

Waldschmidt’s chances of being called up to the national team are increased as Flick prefers to have a solid number nine in his team. However, the former Bayern Munich coach is currently experimenting with Timo Werner and Karim Adeyemi, who seem to be ahead of Waldschmidt in the pecking order.
