Zoff would be happy if Donnarumma beats his record at Euro 2020

Former Italy goalkeeper Dino Zoff said he would be happy to see Gianluigi Donnarumma beats his record of minutes without conceding a goal.

Former

Milan

goalkeeper

Gianluigi Donnarumma

kept a clean sheet for the seventh consecutive match in their 3-0 victory over

Turkey

in Euro 2020 opener.

Zoff

, who won Euro 1968 and the 1982 World Cup with Italy, holds the record of 1143 minutes without conceding any goals but said he would be happy to see Donnarumma beat his record during Euro 2020 this summer.

“If my record was beaten, I would be happy,”

Zoff told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It would mean Italy go all the way to Wembley.

“But even if Donnarumma conceded one, it wouldn’t change much, the group have the resources to be competitive, to overturn the situation.

“It can happen and shouldn’t be a problem.”

Zoff praised Azzurri’s performance against Turkey on Friday.

“In the opening match, the Azzurri played very well,”

he continued.

“But be careful. Turkey played really bad.

“With the center-forward isolated upfront, they tried hopeless long balls, or they tried to restart with low triangles that allowed our team to press high.

“There will be teams capable of organizing a more decent counterattack. Then it will be necessary for the coach and the players to find the right counter-moves to avoid any danger.”

The 79-year-old made 112 appearances for Italy before he retired in 1983 after 11 seasons and six Scudetti with Juventus.
