Bilbao won’t be one of the Euro 2020 hosts

Bilbao’s local authorities react to EUFA’s decision of dropping them from hosting the tournament.

EUFA has dropped Bilbao from the list of the cities that will host the Euro 2020 tournament after the authorities decided that the city cannot guarantee the capacity of at least 25 percent in the San Mames stadium.

Now the city officials have reacted to the decision, refusing to accept EUFA’s opinion on their capability in hosting the tournament.

A statement read:

"Bilbao will not host games at Euro 2020. However, we won't allow Bilbao or the Basque institutions to be taken for a ride.

"Nor are we going to allow the proven and long-standing experience and capability of the Basque authorities to manage and organise international events to be called into question.

"We will not allow doubts to persist regarding the approach to this project, in which over a timespan of more than six years, the Basque way of doing things has prevailed: seriousness, coherence, professionalism and responsibility."

UEFA will announce the final decision about three of the cities that were among the tournament hosts, including Bilbao, on Friday to give them time to prove their capability of hosting the tournament; the other cities whose capability is in doubt are Munich and Dublin.
