Koeman disappointed with late VAR penalty call in El Clasico defeat

Barcelona boss, Ronald Koeman revealed that he felt unhappy with the match officials at full time in their 2-1 El Clasico loss against Real Madrid.

The Blaugrana

have managed to play better after the two goals they conceded against Madrid at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano, while Oscar Mingueza’s goal in the 60th minute got them back.

The Dutch coach believes that a clear chance was taken from his team to equalize in the last minutes by the match referee, Gil Manzano, and the VAR team.

Danish international, Martin Braithwaite fell down under a challenge from Ferland Mendy inside the box but Manzano refused to grant a spot-kick.

“For me, the penalty is very clear and everyone has seen it,”

Koeman said in an interview with

Marca

after the match.

“The way Martin falls, it has to be a foul. The referee may not see it, but we have a VAR for situations like this.

“However, it is better not to say more. The team has been mentally good and we deserved a decision in the penalty situation.”

Now, Barca descend to 3rd place in the table with Real Madrid leapfrogging Atletico Madrid to stand at the top overnight.

Koeman's team take a break from league matches next weekend to play against Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final.
