Marcelino was about to leave Spain before joining Athletic Club.

manager says that he was about to leave the country just 72 hours before hearing the club’s offer.

revealed that after he was appointed as Athletic Club’s head coach.

He has been appointed in the place of Gaizka Garitano who was sacked after his side’s victory against Elche.

The 55 years old manager has agreed on a 18 month contract that can be extended for another year according to an option in his deal.

Marcelino will guide his team against Barcelona in his first match as Athletic Club’s boss.

Here is what Marcelino said in his press conference on Tuesday:

"Until 72 hours ago, I had the same idea of ​​leaving Spain. We then thought that this was the only opportunity I had to coach this great club and we decided to come here. We were attracted to the idea. We are very excited. We thank the club for having thought of us for this project.”

He has been working as a manager in La Liga since 2006 and has worked with different clubs (Recreativo de Huelva, Racing Santander, Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia)
