Van Marwijk is confident that UAE can reach the 2022 World Cup
The Dutch coach was appointed as the National Team manager earlier this week for a second stint.
After the dismissal of Jorge Luis Pinto, there was a lot of speculation over who will become the next
UAE
coach until on Monday
Bert Van Marwijk
was announced to have been selected to lead the team once more with a reported two-year contract. Van Marwijk was dismissed from coaching the UAE about a year ago but his successors Ivan Jovanovic and Pinto were not able to satisfy the FA expectations. In an interview with
Algemeen Dagblad
after signing his new contract, Van Marwijk spoke about his goals as the new UAE manager.
"For me, it is important that I see perspective: if it was purely for the money I could have taken another job. But playing a World Cup remains something fantastic. I have experienced it with the Netherlands and Australia. I believe it is also possible with the United Arab Emirates."
Van Marwijk’s team is in the Group G of the World Cup qualifiers and will face Malaysia and Indonesia in their next matches. Asked about his team’s chances to reach the third round of the competition, Van Marwijk responded:
"That position is quite distorted. We have six points now, but played one game less than the rest: if we win it, we will be second.
"Moreover, three of our last four games are at home. The No 1 qualifies; the No 2 has a chance through the play-offs. I see opportunity otherwise I would not have taken the job again."
