Ex-Atletico Madrid player confirms retirement

Former Atletico Madrid striker, Jackson Martinez has confirmed his separation from football at the age of 35.

Martinez

was in the Spanish capital for six months, moving in from Porto before joining China with Guangzhou Evergrande after failing to fit into Diego Simeone’s playing style.

Quickly after moving to China, he endured a severe ankle injury that finally wrecked his career, putting him aside for 2 years.

“Since my ankle injury in 2015/16 a fight began where I gave everything of myself to return to play in favorable conditions, and although I returned to the pitch after two years, it was very difficult to perform as I wanted,

Martinez

said.

The striker who was born in Quibdo, Colombia, started his career with Independiente Medellin ahead of going to Mexico with Chiapas.

While he recovers from his injury,

Martinez

went to Portugal with Portimonense but in the end, he couldn't recapture the style with which he made his name.

Martinez

played 40 times for Colombia, netting eight goals and performing at the 2011 and 2015 Copa America as well as the 2014 World Cup.
