However, we actually got to see the clubs competing in the German top-flight make some exciting signings in the process. Bundesliga January 2022 transfer window

While the top-2 did not sign anyone as they are definitely saving up for a better summer transfer window, other teams have signed some exciting talents in the month that passed. Perhaps one of the more exciting arrivals is Bayer Leverkusen’s new striker and we surely going to delve deeper into his career down below. So without further ado, here is everything you need to know about Bundesliga winter transfers in 2021/22.

Bayern Munich

Arrivals:

No arrivals.

Departures:

Michael Cusance (Venezia), Bright Arrey-Mbi (FC Koln – loan), Adrian Fein (Dynamo Dresden – loan)

Bayern Munich

have been the reigning champions of Germany for several years now and they don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. The Bavarians have proven time and time again that they are undoubtedly one of the best clubs in the world by winning two historic sextuples in only a matter of years.

They are known for making their league rivals weaker by signing their best-performing players and even managers if they need to. That is why they signed Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig over the summer, while also signing a contract with their manager Julian Nagelsmann to take the helm in the 2021-22 season.

While Bayern Munich were quite active in the summer, their

Bundesliga 2022 winter transfer window

was quite dull to be honest as the German side did not get to sign anyone in the month that passed. They also let go of their 22-year-old midfielder Michael Cuisance, joined Venezia for €4 million.

RB Leipzig

Arrivals:

No arrivals.

Departures:

Luan Candido (RB Bragantino), Brian Brobbey (Aajax – loan), Joscha Wosz (Hallescher – loan), Ilaix Moriba (Valencia – loan), Fabrice Hartmann (E. Braunschweig – loan)

RB Leipzig

were the surprise package of the previous season as they somehow went on full throttle to challenge Bayern Munich for the league title. However, they were doomed to deteriorate after the Bavarians got the upper hand to become the champions of Germany in the 2020-21 campaign.

That is because FC Bayern signed several key parts of Leipzig’s squad and their young and aspiring manager over the summer. This highjacking led to Leipzig’s poorer run of form in the league as they are currently sitting sixth on the table with 31 points from 20 games. However, it seems that the

Bundesliga 2022 winter transfer window

was simply not the time for retaliation as the Red Bulls stayed off the market and only let go of Luan Candido for a little over €1 million.

Borussia Dortmund

Arrivals:

No arrivals.

Departures:

Ansgar Knauff (E. Frankfurt – loan), Tobias Raschtl (G. Furth – loan)

The

Bundesliga January 2022 transfer window

was not as eventful as some of the fans might have expected.

Borussia Dortmund

have been Bayern Munich’s main rivals in the league for several years and are currently sitting second behind the Bavarians in the league. Dortmund did not get to sign anyone in the winter transfer window and only loaned out a couple of their youth players to further develop their stats.

Dortmund are currently six points behind league leaders FC Bayern and might have to think about their future as their main striker Erling Haaland is forced to make a decision about his future.

VfL Wolfsburg

Arrivals:

Jonas Wind (FC Copenhagen), Kevin Paredes (DC United), Max Kruse (Union Berlin)

Departures:

Wout Weghorst (Burnley), Marvin Stefaniak (Wurzb. Kickers), Admir Mehmedi (Antalyaspor), Daniel Ginzcek (Dusseldorf), Josuha Guilavogui (Bordordeaux – loan)

VfL

Wolfsburg

were one of the more active teams in the Bundesliga 2022 winter transfer window as they signed a couple of young talents, while also letting go of some of their older players in the process. Wolfsburg are battling for their lives near the bottom of the league table.

They are only a couple of points away from sinking down to the relegation zone, which is exactly why they have tried their best to turn the tides in their favor with Bundesliga transfers in 2021/2022.  The Wolves have spent a total of €23 million to bring in three players in the month that passed. They signed Jonas Wind from FC Copenhagen for €12, while bringing in Kevin Paredes and Max Kruse for €6 and €5 million respectively.

Of course Wolfsburg would not have been able to spend such an amount for their

Bundesliga winter transfers in 2021/22

had they not sold Wout Weghorst to Burnley for €14 million. The 29-year-old’s actual market value is estimated to be around €20 million, which shows how much of a bargain signing he was for the Premier League side.

Eintracht Frankfurt

Arrivals:

Ansgar Knauff (B. Dortmund – loan)

Departures:

Fabio Blanco (Barcelona B)

Eintracht Frankfurt

are currently sitting ninth on the league table with 28 points in 20 games. Being right in the middle of the table, Frankfurt have opted to stay right where they are by only loaning in Ansgar Knauff from Borussia Dortmund for the rest of the season. The German side did not do anything particularly newsworthy in the Bundesliga 2022 winter transfer window and we should expect a mid-table finish for them in the coming months.

Bayer Leverkusen

Arrivals:

Sardar Azmoun (Zenit)

Departures:

Panagiotis Retsos (Hellas Verona), Nadiem Amiri (Genoa – loan)

Bayer Leverkusen have been racing Union Berlin, SC Freiburg and RB Leipzig for a place in next season’s Champions League. That is why they need to score more goals in order to further cement their place in the top-four. With that goal in mind, we got to see prolific Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun be a part of

Bundesliga transfers in 2021/2022

as he joined

Bayer Leverkusen

from Zenit St. Petersburg for €4 million.

The 27-year-old’s actual market value is estimated to be around €25 million, which shows what a good deal the German side got for his signature in the winter. We will have to wait and see if the Iran international’s arrival at the club can further boost their stats in the league or not.

Union Berlin

Arrivals:

Sven Michel (SC Paderborn), Andras Schafer (Dunajska Streda), Dominique Heintz (SC Freiburg)

Departures:

Marvin Friedrich (Bor. Munchengladbach), Max Kruse (VfL Wolfsburg), Tymoteusz Puchacz (loan), Pawel Wszolek (Legia Warszawa – loan), Rick van Drongelen (KV Mechelen – loan), Fabio Schneider

Union Berlin

have been rising up the ranks in recent seasons as they are currently amongst the top-4 alongside Leverkusen, Dortmund and FC Bayern. The German side have accumulated 34 points from 20 games so far and were quite busy in the Bundesliga 2022 winter transfer window.

They managed to acquire Sven Michel from SC Paderborn for €2.5 million, while signing 22-year-old central midfielder Andras Schafer for €1 million. Not only did Union Berlin sign a couple of players, the Bundesliga 2022 transfer news indicates that they have let go of Marvin Friedrich and Max Kruse for €5 million each.

They have also sent a couple of their young talents out on loan for the rest of the season, including Cedric Teuchert, Pawl Wszolek, Fabio Schneider and Rick van Drongelen. Having earned a €7 million profit with their Bundesliga winter transfers in 2021/22 season, we will have to wait and see how they spend their profits in the coming months and where they end up in the league.

Borussia Monchengladbach

Arrivals:

Marvin Friedrich (Union Berlin)

Departures:

Deniz Zakaria (Juventus), Torben Musel (KAS Eupen – loan), Hannes Wolf (Swansea – loan)

Borussia Monchengladbach

are roaming too close to the relegation zone as they have only acquired 22 points from their 20 league games. With 37 goals conceded in those games, the German side needed a serious boost to their defenses and a boost they got in the Bundesliga 2022 winter transfer window. The Prussians signed Marvin Friedrich from Union Berlin for €5.5 million, which is actually half the 26-year-old center-back’s market value. While their midfield has lost Denis Zakaria to Juventus for only €8 million, perhaps Friedrich’s arrival can return some of the defensive strength they so desperately need.

VfB Stuttgart

Arrivals:

Tiago Tomas (Sporting CP – loan)

Departures:

Marc Oliver Kempf (Hertha BSC), Hamadi Al Ghaddioui (Pafos FC), Philipp Klement (SC Paderborn – loan), Momo Cisse (Wisla Krakow – loan)

According to the latest

Bundesliga 2022 transfer news

,

VFB Stuttgart

have only been able to loan in 19-year-old center-forward Tiago Tomas from Sporting CP, while letting go of Marc Oliver Kempf and Hamadi Al Ghaddioui in order to earn the funds needed for a single player’s loan fee. With Stuttgart currently being deep in the relegation zone, it is up to debate whether a 19-year-old can lift their side’s spirit by becoming a prolific goal scorer in remaining half of the season.

SC Freiburg

Arrivals:

Hugo Siquet (Standard Liege)

Departures:

Dominique Heintz (Union Berlin)

Despite Freiburg only spending a little over €4 million in the Bundesliga 2022 winter transfer window, they have actually spent a lot more than many of the bigger clubs in the German top-flight. The Breisgau Brazilians are currently battling for a place in next season’s Champions League as they are pushing for a better position alongside Union Berlin and Bayer Leverkusen.

While Leverkusen opted to sign an experienced striker to further contribute to their goals, Freiburg went in the other direction as they signed the 19-year-old Hugo Siquet from Standard Liege for €4.5 million. The youngster is actually a right-back and given how strong the club’s defenses have been in recent months, we are certainly going to expect some added quality to the German side’s defenses.

TSG Hoffenheim

Arrivals:

Justin Che (FC Dallas – loan)

Departures:

Joshua Brenet (FC Twente), Bruno Nazario (Vasco de Gama), Melayro Bogarde (FC Groningen – loan), Lucas Ribeiro (Ceara – loan), Joao Klauss (Sint-Truiden – loan), Mijat Gacinovic (Panathinaikos – loan), Sargis Adamyan (Club Brugge – loan)

While TSG

Hoffenheim

were not that active in signing new players in the Bundesliga 2022 winter transfer window, they were quite busy in loaning out their players. The got to loan out five players in January and only loaned in an 18-year-old center-back named Justin Che from FC Dallas. Die Kraichgauer are currently seventh in the league behind RB Leipzig and SC Freiburg.

But they can easily turn the tides in their favor in the coming weeks if they play their cards right. Hoffenheim are actually one of the top goal-scoring teams in the German top-flight, yet lack the defensive discipline need to keep the ball out of their net. That is why they are sitting below RB Leipzig due to a worse goal difference.

FSV Mainz

Arrivals:

Delano Burgzorg

Departures:

Jean-Philippe Mateta (Crystal Palace)

FSV Mainz made a profit in the Bundesliga 2022 winter transfer window as they sold Jean-Philippe Mateta to Crystal Palace for €11 million, which was actually more than double his actual market value. Mainz are currently roaming the middle of the table with 27 points in 20 games and might want to stay right where they are with the transfer policy that they have adopted so far.

FC Augsburg

Arrivals:

Ricardo Pepi (FC Dallas)

Departures:

Sergio Cordova (Salt Lake – loan)

Taking a look at all the arrivals and departures in the German top-flight, one can easily see the good relationship that German clubs have with their American counterparts. Several players have already arrived from the MLS, with several others having joined the American top-tier in the process. Augsburg were actually one of the highest spending clubs in Bundesliga as they spent a total of €16 million to acquire Ricardo Pepi from FC Dallas.

The 19-year-old center-forward attracted quite a lot of attention during his years in the MLS and USL1, in which he managed to score 27 goals in 73 appearances across all competition. He is yet to score his first goal for Augsburg in the Bundesliga and has already made a couple of appearances as a substitute. But it might take a long time before he can be further implemented into the squad as their main center-forward.

Hertha BSC

Arrivals:

Don-Jun Lee (Ulsan Hyundai), Marc Oliver Kempf (VfB Stuttgart), Kelian Nsona (SM Caen), Fredrik Andre Bjorkan (free transfer)

Departures:

Dennis Jastrzenbski (Slask Wroclaw), Krzysztof Piatek (Fiorentina – loan), Deyovaisito Zeefuik (Blackburn Rovers – loan), Jordan Torunarigha (KAA Gent – loan)

Hertha Berlin might have had a busy schedule in the January transfer window, but the club’s total expenditures did not go over a total of €1.8 million. They actually managed to acquire three young and aspiring players with such a fee. They are currently 12th in the league and might get to drop into the relegation zone if they continue dropping points. We will have to wait and see if they can cement their position in the middle of the table with their new signings.

Arminia Bielefeld

Arrivals:

George Bello (Atlanta United), Burak Ince (Altinordu), Gonzalo Castro (free agent)

Departures:

Lennart Czyborra (end of loan)

Having barely escaped relegation in the 2020-21 season, Arminia Bielefeld have been slowly building up strength to finish higher in the league. That is why they have spent more than €2 million to sign George Bello, Burak Ince and Gonzalo Castro. The German club are currently fourteenth on the league table with 21 points in 20 games this season. With three wins and two draws in their last five league games, Arminia have had quite a better run of form lately and are looking to turn the tides in their favor in the coming months.

FC Koln

Arrivals:

Julian Chabot (Sampdoria – loan), Bright Arrey-Mbi (FC Bayern – loan)

Departures:

Jorge Mere (America), Rafael Czichos (Chicago), Robert Voloder (NK Maribor), Sava-Arangel Cestic (HNK Rijeka), Noah Katterbach (FC Basel – loan)

The January transfer window is usually for smaller teams to make new signings in their efforts to finish in a better spot at the end of the season. That is why FC Koln have loaned in a couple of players, while readying their squad for a summer overhaul by letting go of several of their young players. Koln are currently eighth in the league behind TSG Hoffenheim with 29 points in 20 games and are not too far away from earning a spot in next season’s European competitions.

VfL Bochum

Arrivals:

Jurgen Locadia (Brighton)

Departures:

Raman Chibsah (Apollon Smyrnis), Soma Novothny (Anorthosis), Silvere Ganvoula (Cercle Brugge – loan)

The only signing that VfL Bochum have made over the January transfer window is Jurgen Locadia, who arrived at the German club from Brighton & Hove Albion on a free transfer deal. Having spent no money in winter, Bochum have also made no profits either, despite letting go of three players in the process.

SPVGG Greuther Furth

Arrivals:

Andreas Linde (Molde), Afimico Pululu (FC Basel), Tobias Raschl (Borussia Dortmund)

Departures:

Nunoo Sarpei (FC Ingolstadt), Nils Seufert (SV Sandhausen – loan)

Furth have had the worst season amongst all the other Bundesliga teams as they have only managed to accumulate 10 points in their last 20 games, which has pushed them to the depths of the relegation zone. Perhaps Andreas Linde’s arrival from Molde FK could improve the German side’s defensive issues as they have conceded a whopping 52 goals in those 20 games. Only a miracle can save Furth from relegation now as they are several points behind from their competitors. But nothing is set in stone in football and anything can happen in the following months.
