Bundesliga 2021-22 Season Preview

Join us in this Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview as we try to paint a rough picture of what might happen this season:

With DFB-Pokal starting last night, the 2021-22 season has officially started and German football is in full swing once again. Last season ended with Bayern Munich’s 9th consecutive title and the Bavarians will certainly be looking to make that double digits and go for their 10th (and 31 overall) in the upcoming season. with the appointment of the talented Marco Rose as Borussia Dortmund’s manager to help Die Schwarzengelben challenge Bayern and with Bundesliga teams generally keeping onto their star players, the 2021-22 Bundesliga season is shaping up to be an entertaining one.

But our Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview will not only be a look at the title contenders but also an overview of the league itself. A summarized look at certain things and noteworthy battles that will happen during the course of the season for certain spots on the Bundesliga table. So let’s get down to this

Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview

as we try make educated guesses on where teams might end up by the end of the season.

Bundesliga 2021-22 Season Preview

As we did with our

2021-22 Premier League season preview

, we’ve broken down this preview to 4 categories that will cover from the relegation battle up to the title race as well as what surprises might this season hold for us. So without further ado, here is our Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview:

Relegation Candidates

Ok so let’s get the bad news out of the way first which is regarding the teams that we think will end up in the lower half of the

Bundesliga table

, particularly the relegation zone. The first team that we have to point out is Arminia Bielefeld who stayed up in the league by the skin of their teeth last season, avoiding relegation by only 2 points. Only Schalke 04, who had one of the most horrendous seasons in recent memory, had a worse goal tally than Arminia and that wasn’t by much since Arminia’s ridiculously low 26 goal tally is only a goal better than Schalke.

With Arminia having one of the worst defensive and offensive records in the league last season and with no notable addition to the squad that would make them better, they will undoubtedly be one of our picks for relegation in our Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview.

Arminia

will be joined by Bundesliga's new boys

Greuther Furth

in the relegation battle, who seem to lack the personnel to really stay at the top level.

FC Koln, who actually got relegated last season and only survived through the relegation play-offs, as well as Augsburg who also had one of the worst expected goals and expected allowed goals last season, almost as bad as Arminia, are the two other teams that we think will be struggling in the

2021-22 Bundesliga

season.

The Race for European Places

The real excitement in the Bundesliga actually comes in the race for European qualification places as teams try to trail the eventual champions Bayern Munich. Last season especially was interesting since Dortmund didn’t really start the season well and had sacked their manager mid-season and teams like

Wolfsburg

and

Borussia Monchengladbach

were exceptionally well. Even though Gladbach suffered at the end of the season and lost their manager to Dortmund we think that they will be in the race for a Champions League qualification once more.

However, they have a lot to improve to catch Wolfsburg who we think would finish in the 4th place of the Bundesliga table behind

Bayern Munich

,

Borussia Dortmund

and RB Leipzig. Eintracht Frankfurt, who also had a great year last season coming in 5th, suffered a huge loss as they sold their best player and the main source of their goals, Andrea Silva, to RB Leipzig. Silva’s 28 goals would not be easily replaced and Frankfurt will suffer for it and we suspect they’ll end up outside the top 6.

So with Wolfsburg in 4th and Gladbach in 5th, we think the race for the 6th spot will b between Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin. Leverkusen lost one of their most important players in Leon Bailey and will suffer as a result of that but not so much as to fall out of the top 6 completely.

Now with all that said and with all the conflicting

Bundesliga news

, especially transfer news, going around, we predict that all our predictions in the Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview will be subject to change and we might see all these teams end up in a different situation than we have predicted them to do since the difference between these four or five teams is so minimal.

Title Contenders

At this point, we’re not even sure if we should have this section in our

Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview

since the league is all but won by Bayern Munich even before the competition starts. The Bavarian Giants have always dominated the Bundesliga but in recent years they’ve taken that domination to a whole other level. Bayern Munich are simply in a league of their own and no one seems to even touch them in the league even when they have a relatively bad season.

However, challenging Bayern Munich, who want to secure their 10th consecutive

Bundesliga

title, are the usual suspects, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig. We think Dortmund in particular will have a great season helped by the fact that they’ve brought in one of the best young German managers, Marco Rose, to the team. With Rose at the helm and the likes of Marco Reus, Giovanni Reyna and the beast that is Erling Haaland Dortmund will certainly cause Bayern problems in the 2021-22 Bundesliga season.

RB Leipzig have also strengthened their squad significantly in the summer with the addition of Dominik Szoboszlai and Andrea Silva but their manager Jesse Marsch has a lot to prove this season, which is why we’ll place RB Leipzig in the 3rd place behind eventual champions Bayern Munich and 2nd placed Borussia Dortmund in our Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview.

Over-performers and Under-achievers

The last part of our

Bundesliga 2021-22 season preview

is about the teams that we think will either perform better than expected or will have a disappointing season, declining or finish lower than expected. and as our over-performer of the season, we have chosen everyone’s second favorite team in the Bundesliga, Union Berlin.

The Berliners are relatively new to the league but are very tightly managed and certainly a club on the rise. They managed to finish the last season strong and finally cracked the 50 pts mark in a single season. with a couple of good signing Union Berlin will be looking to push for the European qualification places and may very well end up as the surprise team of the season.

Hoffenheim

, on the other hand, who were once in a similar situation

Union Berlin

is in right now and were an up and coming club, seem to be stagnating recently. Die achtzen99, were in the Champions League not a few years ago but now are finishing lower and lower each season. surely the departure of Nagglesman who was the manager that took them to the Champions League, has impacted them negatively but they should’ve been run better to not be in this much of decline.
