Barcelona Summer Transfers 2021

After a rather unsuccessful season of 2020/21, FC Barcelona entered this transfer season while being in the red. Read on to find out more about Barcelona transfer news.

The club has been paying wages more than they can afford, and with the COVID-19 pandemic and the huge financial crisis it has brought about, not so many big signings were expected.

However, with Juan Laporta being in charge again, the fans are hopeful to see their club stand on their feet again. The most important issue

FC Barcelona

has been expected to face this summer was the renewal of Lionel Messi's contract which ended in July. However, the rumors say that the legend will stay at Camp Nou for 5 more years.

On the other hand, since the arrival of new boss,

Ronald Koeman

, it has been the beginning of a new Barcelona. He has changed the squad and although the fans are not sure of his techniques as a manager, he has achieved acceptable results.

Manchester City

.

Eric Garcia

signed a 5-year contract with FC Barcelona which means he will at least stay at Camp Nou until 2026- if no unexpected move happens.

The young center back has shown great potential under Pep Guardiola, and

Luis Enrique

, Spain's manager, also relies on him greatly. Garcia has played for Manchester City's youth level teams (U18 – U19 – U23) as well wearing the senior team's shirt on 35 occasions.

The emergence of Eric Garcia brings the hope of seeing a new Puyol to the hearts of Blaugrana fans, although it's to0 soon to judge. Barcelona are hoping to repair their breakable defense line.

  • Full name: Memphis Depay

  • Date of birth: 13 February 1994 (age 27)

  • Height: 1.76 m (5 ft 9 in)

  • Position(s): Forward

The 27-year-old attacker joined FC Barcelona on a free agent after three and a half wonderful resurrection seasons at Olympique Lyon.

Memphis Depay

came into prominence after shining in 2014 World Cup with Netherlands national team, and him becoming the Eredivise's top scorer of 2014/15 with PSV Eindhoven while being only 21.

He joined Manchester United, but could never repeat his stunning performances there. So, Memphis made a move to France to play for Olympique Lyon in 2017, where he scored 76 goals and provided 55 assists within 178 matches, and persuaded Barcelona authorities and of course their manager, Ronald Koeman, to sign him this summer with a 2-year contract.

However, Barcelona had taken an unsuccessful approach toward him last season as well. Memphis scored 20 goals and recorded 12 assists within 37 League 1 games last season, and Barcelona fans are extremely hopeful about the "Dutch Lion" to shine in their shirt. Moreover, Depay's performance was quite satisfying in EURO 2020 with 2 goals and 1 assist in 4 matches.

Emerson Royal: Real Betis to FC Barcelona

  • Full name: Emerson Aparecido Leite de Souza Junior

  • Date of birth: 14 January 1999 (age 22)

The Brazilian right back first joined Barcelona for €12.00m in the January of 2019, but was immediately sold to

Emerson signed a 3-year contract with Barcelona. 22-year-old scored 1 goal and provided 4 assists in 20/21 LaLiga season, and Barcelona's hopeful about finally finding a new

However, he lost most of the last season due to consecutive injuries and COVID-19 infection. Aguero joined Barcelona as a free transfer the same as Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia, while Barcelona is in huge financial debt.

The 21-year-old center back only played in 5 matches for Blaugrana, and was not given enough chance within his spell at Camp Nou. However, selling him in Barcelona's current financial situation for €8.5m does not seem to be an unreasonable action after all.

  • Date of birth: 5 January 1998 (age 23)

  • Place of birth: Mataró, Spain

was one of the young talents that made his way to the senior team. He showed great potential and his performances were promising, however, he couldn't compete with the piles of world class midfielders.

Alena was loaned out to Real Betis in the January of 2020 for half a season, and returned to Camp Nou at the end of 2019/20 season. He played for Barcelona for another 6 months until being loaned out to Getafe in the January of 2021. Getafe activated his purchase clause at this time and bought Carles Alenia from Barcelona for €5.0m.

He had featured in 44 matches for Blaugrana and has scored 3 goals. Moreover, Alena has made 89 appearances for Barcelona B, scored 18 goals and recorded 14 assists.

With regard to the many players who were grown in Lamasia, but left Barcelona and shined in another team, Barca fans are worried that the same would happen to one of their biggest talents of the last years. In July 2018, he was nominated for the Golden Boy award.

Juan Miranda: FC Barcelona to Real Betis

  • Full name: Juan Miranda González

  • Date of birth: 19 January 2000 (age 21)

Miranda had only featured in 4 games for Barcelona senior team, in addition to his 30 appearances for Barcelona B, in which he had scored 2 goals and provided 3 assists.

Furthermore, Miranda played in 22 La Liga games for Real Betis last season (20/21), scored 1 goal and provided 2 assists, convincing the club's authorities and their manager to buy the young promising left back who Barcelona may regret letting him go this effortlessly, and without asking for any price, in the future.

Real Valladolid

for 6 months where he played in only 3 matches.

Fernandez came back to Camp Nou at the start of 20/21 season, but in most of the games he was not even called up to the squad, and only featured in 1 game throughout the season. He returned to his former club, Palmeiras, for free this summer.

Monchu: FC Barcelona to Granada CF

  • Full name: Ramón Rodríguez Jiménez

  • Date of birth: 13 September 1999 (age 22)

  • Place of birth: Palma, Spain

  • Height: 1.73 m (5 ft 8 in)

  • Position(s): Midfielder

Monchu joined Barcelona's youth setup in 2012, from Mallorca. After he proceeded through the youth setup, he made his debut for Barcelona B in the December of 2017. He played in a total of 66 games for Barcelona B, scored 13 goals and provided 7 assists.

Monchu only featured in only 1 match for FC Barcelona senior team, coming off the bench in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against

Napoli

.

Barcelona announced that they had reached an agreement with Girona for the loan transfer of Monchu until the end of the season in the September of 2020 to play for them in the Spanish Segunda Division.

Monchu made 43 appearances for Girona, and recorded 3 goals as well as 1 assist. This summer, however, Granada announced the signing of this Lamasia talent for free, while Barça reserves a right to 50% of any future sale of the player and a buy-back option.

Francisco Trincao: FC Barcelona to Wolverhampton Wanderers

The Portuguese right winger came to Camp Nou from SC Braga in the summer of 2020 for €31.00m. The 22-year-old talent featured in 42 games for Blaugrana throughout the season, scored 3 goals and provided 2 assists.

Barcelona decided to loan

Francisco Trincao

out and let him gain experience by playing more often: On 4 July 2021, Wolverhampton Wanderers announced the signing of Trincão on a season-long loan from Barcelona, and there is an option for Wolves to make the move permenant with €25.00m.

Although

Lionel Messi

said his next move is not confirmed at an emotional farewell news conference, but various sources said a deal with Paris Saint-Germain has already been agreed.

Messi, who has been a free agent since his contract expired at Camp Nou on June 30, had maintained his silence since Barca announced that he will not sign new terms because of financial problems.

The Argentina forward said he had received several calls from clubs since the news broke, confirming PSG's interest, and according to reporters he has already agreed to sign for the Ligue 1 side.

Messi is expected to travel to Paris soon before completing a medical in the coming days and signing a two-year deal with the option for a third season.

"[PSG] is one possibility," Messi said. "There's nothing closed at the moment, but we're talking about a lot of things. After Barca's statement, a lot of clubs showed an interest. There's nothing final but, of course, there are talks."

"There is no doubt that I will go to a team that will compete with Barca. I didn't want to leave, but I have to. And I want to keep winning. That's my mentality. I want to win," he added.
