Marcelo Gallardo’s departure from Al-Ittihad Jeddah

Darkness of the road: A journey of failure in the tunnel of risks and challenges

The departure of Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo from coaching Al-Ittihad Jeddah team has become a clear matter and a matter of time, after many local and foreign sources confirmed his separation from “The Dean” in the coming few days.

Al-Ittihad Jeddah contracted with Gallardo during last November, to replace the Portuguese coach Nuno Santo, however, his period of leading the team was full of challenges and difficulties.

On his first day with the team, Gallardo confirmed in his press conference his commitment to his efforts to return “The Dean” to the right path, but he faced accumulated problems and very big challenges, starting from the weak level of the players to the administrative disturbances and crises inside the dressing room.

As a result of these challenges, a season devoid of successes, where the team failed to achieve any championship, including losing the Saudi League and the local Super, and the early exit from the King’s Cup and the Asian Champions League.

Gallardo was subjected to sharp criticism from the media and the fans because of these negative results, although he was not the only one responsible for the current situation.

While leading “The Tigers”, Gallardo found himself facing several problems, starting from the absence of strong deals in the transfer period and the presence of a small number of foreign elements, to the presence of an unideal balance in the formation and the excessive reliance on certain players.

Gallardo also suffered from a problem in the position of the foreign wing, where he was relying on one player in this position, which affected the performance of the team in general.

In terms of the attack, the Argentine coach found himself facing difficulty in balancing the attacking trio, which caused the team to be subjected to counter-attacks frequently.

Despite all these challenges, Gallardo did not commit catastrophic mistakes, but he was working seriously and devotedly to achieve success, but he found himself a scapegoat in the end, bearing the responsibility of the team’s failure and the bad administrative situation.
