Tchouameni apologizes for skipping Madrid's cup game for an NBA trip

The French midfielder opted to go to Paris for an NBA game instead of Madrid's Copa del Rey clash with Villarreal. His action came under scrutiny from supporters as he issues an official apology.

Real Madrid

had to come behind two goals to secure a 3-2 victory against Villarreal in Copa del Rey, while their summer signing

Aurelien Tchouameni

was at the Accor Arena to watch an NBA clash between Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons.

Acknowledging he made a mistake by not staying in Spain, the injured Tchouameni subsequently issued an apology.

"

I apologize to my club, the coaching staff, my team-mates and the Madrid fans for my presence at an event at a time when we were [...] in the cup,"

he wrote on social media.

"I have been attentive at all times to what was happening in Villarreal, but I have not done the right thing. [I am] very sorry."

Tchouameni has been sidelined since the Los Blancos La Liga defeat to Villarreal on January 7.
