Shay Given backs Newcastle to challenge for the title

Former Ireland and Newcastle shot stopper dares the Magpies to dream of winning the Premier League.

Shay Given doesn’t see a reason why

Newcastle United

couldn’t dream of winning the Premier League after clubs like Leicester City have done so in the past.

The Magpies beat Leicester City in King Power Stadium 3-0, momentarily moving them to the second place in the Premier League table until Manchester City faces against Leeds tomorrow. This was Newcastle’s 6 consecutive victory in the Premier League, which is only the first time they have done so, for over a decade.

Moreover, Howe’s men have won 21 EPL games in the 2022 calendar year which is only two short of their record in 95 when they eventually finished second in the league. This has led to former Newcastle goalkeeper, Shay Given, to think that Newcastle has genuine title chances.

Given, who played 462 times for Newcastle between 1997 and 2009, talked to Amazon Prime Video after Newcastle victory over Leicester, saying:

"Can Newcastle compete to win the league? Leicester did it a few years back, why can't Newcastle dream of it? Why not?"

"Internally, it's [about keeping] expectations in check, not putting unnecessary pressure on ourselves,"

Given added.

"Let's just go into the next game and try to win it, try to execute our game plan as well as we have in previous games.

"Everyone else no doubt will talk and build things up. We can't control it. Let people do it, as long as we're internally focused on what we have to do to perform well.

Chris Wood

, who scored Newcastle’s opener on the night, admitted that the team is not thinking about it but the fans could dream.

"It's way too early to even think about that, but [the fans] can go on and dream.”

Wood said.

"They're enjoying it, and we just want to put on a show for them and show what we can do. It's a great start."
