Xavi pays tribute to Busquets in the aftermath of his Spain retirement.

Barcelona boss Xavi lauded his former teammate and current Barcelona captain Busquets for the incredible career he had with La Roja.

Sergio Busquets announced his retirement from international duty on Friday, having won a World Cup and a European Championship with La Roja, partnering with the likes of Xavi and Iniesta in midfield.

Busquets made 143 appearances for Spain scoring twice for La Roja and while he captained them in all 4 of their 2022 World Cup games, his miss in the penalty shoot-outs against Morocco is what sent the Atlas Lions to the semis and Spain to home.

However, Barca boss Xavi congratulated

Busquets

on his international career as he pointed out to the midfield maestro’s achievements with La Roja.

"In the end, it's a personal decision that you make when you feel the time is right,"

Xavi said via

"I wish him the best, now he will be able to rest more and focus on Barca.

"He is a player who has made history. He is one of the best midfielders that football has produced worldwide and, for sure, the best defensive midfielder in the history of Spain."

 His teammate

Jordi Alba

also weighed in on the news, also praising Busquets on Twitter by saying:

"You have always been a great leader for all of us who are part of the team, both in good times and in bad.

"After so many training sessions and games together in the national team, today you say goodbye and you will be sorely missed, friend.

"Thank you for what you have contributed to us and for everything you have given."
