"Messi is a wonderful player, but more than that he's a reference", says Cristian Romero
Argentina defender Cristian Romero says Lionel Messi is an inspiration for them following beating Croatia in the World Cup semifinal.
will play either France or Morocco in the
World Cupfinal on Sunday after they beat
Croatia3-0 on Tuesday.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 34th minute. Julian Alvarez scored the second goal just five minutes later. Alvarez scored his second goal in the 69th minute with a special assist from Messi.
After the game, Cristian Romero said Messi had tough moments in his career but he has not given up and now can play in another World Cup final.
Romero said:
"Leo's of course a wonderful player, but more than that he's a reference and he's somebody who is a personality, who is always going for more.
"He's been hit so many times and every time he gets back up again and goes for more and he has the strength to do that. He won a Copa America, he's a benchmark like others, [Angel] Di María, Kun [Sergio Aguero], who is no longer here."
Messi become Argentina's record World Cup scorer with 11 goals and also made his 25 World Cup appearances to match the record of Lothar Matthaus.
Argentina and Messi played in the 2014 World Cup final but they lost to Germany. Argentina has lost their last two World Cup final matches and last won the trophy in 1986.
Romero added:
"You put your life into this, to bring the trophy home. We're here to deliver. It was shown once again that we are lions. No matter what happens on Sunday, we are going to give all we've got to bring the cup home."
