England 1–2 France: Kane's Missed Penalty Proved to Be Decisive
Hours after Morocco's shocking victory over Portugal, the reigning World Cup champions, France, faced their bitter rivals England in an attempt to continue their journey to defend the title while the Euro 2020 runners-up wanted to show their progress by proceeding to the next round.
With
England
winning both of their previous World Cup meetings,
France
was eager to change the record as the Englishmen were eliminated from six of their last eight World Cup encounters with fellow European sides. A 17-minute goal from
Tchouaméni
ended the first half with a 1-0 advantage for France as Hugo Lloris declined his Tottenham teammate Harry Kane twice, to keep the result. France was dangerous in the counterattacks but they couldn't make the final third after scoring the goal.
Kane equalized for England from the spot in the 54th minute after Hernandez made a foul on Saka in the penalty box. While Giroud won back the lead in the 78th minute heading in Antoine Griezmann's perfect cross. VAR awarded England a second penalty in the 82nd minute but unlike the first time, Kane missed the penalty as England kept chasing the second goal.
France proceeded to the semi-final of Qatar 2022, where they will face Morocco.
