Maldini: “Milan failed to extend Leao’s contract before the World Cup”

With Leao and Bennacer's contracts due to expire in 2024, the Rossoneri was planning to extend their contracts before the start of the Qatar World Cup, which as their director Maldini admits, they have failed to do.

director Paolo Maldini confirmed the club wants to extend the contract of both Rafael Leao and Ismael Bennacer, with the Algerian closer to signing a new deal.

“We’ve been talking about this [contract extensions] for months, if not years.

“We’ll meet at the right moment and make a decision. The idea was to close [the deal] before the World Cup, especially with players involved in the competition, Leao in this case.

“It was not possible. We have a chance to talk to Bennacer and his agents these days.”

, Maldini said:

“I am not strictly a sporting director, although some duties are partially the same. There isn’t a role like mine in any other club.

“I am responsible for the technical area. I am very happy to be here in this new chapter of my life.”
