Chelsea's €8m asking fee is holding up Barcelona's Azpilicueta track

The big clubs in La Liga still want to bring an experienced Spanish defender back to his home country, but making a deal is hard.

Cesar Apzilicueta

is still one of

Barcelona

's top transfer targets, but GOAL has learned that

Chelsea

is having trouble getting the price they want their longtime club captain.

Blaugrana manager

Xavi

wants to add more experience to his defense. He just signed former Chelsea defender

Andreas Christensen

as a free agent, and now he wants to sign a 32-year-old from Chelsea.

At one point, it looked like the team would move to Camp Nou, but no deal has been made and there are now more problems to solve. Barca has been keeping an eye on the Spain international, who can play right-back or center-back, for a few months.

He was another player in west London who was going to be a free agent this summer. However, his contract had an automatic 12-month extension that kicked in in March when he made 35 appearances in the 2021-22 season.

Todd Boehly, the new owner of Chelsea, has recently been in Catalonia to talk with Joan Laporta and

Mateu Alemany

, the president and director of football at Camp Nou. In those talks, Azpilicueta's name came up.

Barca wants to sign a star player who has won the Premier League and the Champions League to a two-year deal, but the player is now asking for a fee. Chelsea doesn't want to lose their captain for free, and GOAL has learned that they want to get back the €8 million (£7m/$8m) they paid Marseille in 2012 to sign Azpilicueta.

Barcelona thinks that price is too high, but Chelsea doesn't want to lose a player who has played for them 476 times, rarely gets hurt, and can always be counted on to step up as a leader when needed.
