Africa Cup of Nations: 2023 finals moved to 2024 over weather concerns

The 2022-2023 season will be cut short by the World Cup in Qatar. However, the Africa Cup of Nations will be moved to the next season.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe

said that the next Africa Cup of Nations will be held in January and February 2024 instead of between June and July 2023.

The best international tournament in Africa was supposed to take place in

Ivory Coast

during the off-season in Europe next year. However, heavy flooding in the country at that time of year means that it will take place again in the middle of the club season.

Motsepe said at a meeting of the CAF Executive Committee in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, "We cannot take the risk. "January is not the best time because of the European clubs, but it's the only one we have."

In 2017, CAF said that the tournament would be held at the end of the club season in Europe. But this year's tournament, which was won by Senegal in February, had to be moved twice because of the COVID-19 pandemic and bad weather in

Cameroon

. It was supposed to start in June 2021 and June 2022.

Several big-name club coaches probably won't like the move.

Liverpool

's

Jurgen Klopp

is one well-known coach who didn't like the decision to play the last tournament in the middle of the European season.

CAF Secretary-General Veron Mosengo-Omba, on the other hand, said that a permanent switch to a January-February tournament was not likely because the weather in different parts of the continent is different.

On Sunday, CAF also announced the creation of the African Super League. The first tournament of the 24-team league, which will run alongside the African Champions League, will start in August 2023.
