Cavani regrets leaving Man Utd with a 'bitter taste'

Cavani will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season with the his contract expiring.

Manchester United

striker

Edinson Cavani

regrets that he could not have done better in his second season.

Cavani left

Paris Saint-Germain

in the summer of 2020 and joined

Manchester United

. In his first season, which was held without a spectator due to a Covid-19 pandemy, he had good performances and was able to score 10 goals as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side finished the season in second place.

However, in the second season, he did not get much of an opportunity under Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, and was only included in the starting line-up seven times, scoring two goals. Cavani suffered a number of injuries and was replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo, but as he left Old Trafford at the end of the season, he complained that he could not contribute more for the club.

He said:

"I wanted to contribute more this season.

"One of the things that has left me with a slightly bitter taste is that when we had a highly enjoyable and pretty decent season [in 2020-21], we weren't able to have the supporters along with us.

"And now, this season, with the fans coming back into the grounds and stadiums, I haven't really been able to have the kind of campaign, if I'm being honest, on a personal front, that I would really have liked.

"I would have been able to score the kind of goals I did last season, and then be celebrating them a bit more with the fans – the kind of stuff that is great for a forward or a striker to be doing.

"But I want to sincerely thank the fans from the bottom of my heart, because they have always shown me a lot of affection, and that is very important for a footballer."
