Nemanja Vidic urges Ralf Rangnick to bench Harry Maguire

Nemanja Vidic, a Manchester United hero, has given Ralf Rangnick some tips on how to deal with Harry Maguire's poor form.

Manchester United

interim manager

Ralf Rangnick

has been asked by

Nemanja Vidic

to temporarily bench

Harry Maguire

in order for the center-back to rebuild his confidence. Maguire arrived from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019, but his time at Old Trafford has been questioned, particularly this season as United has struggled.

Rangnick's side lost 1-0 to

Everton

in the

Premier League

on Saturday, with Anthony Gordon's shot bouncing off Maguire and past David De Gea, putting the Red Devils six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham.

Rangnick's 47 percent win rate is the worst of any Red Devils manager in Premier League history, and United appear to be on the verge of missing out on a Champions League berth. Maguire has received a lot of flak for his disappointing season, and former United center-back Vidic believes Rangnick needs to shield his defender.

Vidic, who played for United from 2006 to 2014, told The Athletic, "Every player has a difficulty with the form at some point in his career." "I did, and it's evident that Maguire isn't having the best season of his career. I believe there are a few things you can do, one of which is not to play every match while you strive to regain your form and confidence.

"A coach might put him in easy games, which aren't many in the Premier League, and then bring him out for the tougher ones. The athlete must regain his sense of power and strength on the field, rather than feeling as if it isn't occurring for him right now.

"When you're under a lot of pressure and people are waiting for you to make a mistake, it's difficult to play well. You've asked me a question, and I'm responding as a coach."

Only De Gea (31) and Bruno Fernandes (29) have made more league appearances for United this season (26). In addition, the England international has made the joint-most errors resulting to a goal (one – tied with De Gea and Luke Shaw) and the joint-most errors leading to a shot for his country (three along with

Jadon Sancho

and Nemanja Matic). Vidic is adamant that if Maguire needs time off, Rangnick will provide it to him without question.

"It's not a problem if a player tells his coach he's not feeling well on the field," he continued. "If he says, 'Give me a break, give me a couple of weeks to regroup and train properly, and then I'll play again,' you should listen. I'd had a few of bad games for United and wanted to regroup and progress."
