France's Didier Deschamps recalled Giroud after Benzema's injury

Olivier Giroud hasn't played for France since the team was eliminated from Euro 2020, but his displays for AC Milan have made him difficult to overlook.

France has recalled Olivier Giroud, giving him the chance to cement his place in

Didier Deschamps

' World Cup preparations.

Since France's Euro 2020 elimination at the hands of Switzerland in June, the Rossoneri forward has not played for his country.

He has netted 46 goals in 110 appearances for his country, putting him only five goals behind

Thierry Henry

for the most in the team's history.

Giroud's international career seemed to be ended after coach Deschamps declined to summon him into successive teams.

However, Giroud has been called up to accompany France for the next friendlies versus Ivory Coast and South Africa due to Real Madrid forward

Karim Benzema

's calf injury, which will keep him out of Sunday's El Clasico against Barcelona.

The news was revealed on the French Football Federation's website, with the France staff wishing Benzema "a swift recovery."

After leaving Giroud out of a 23-man squad on Thursday, Deschamps commented about the 35-year-strong old's form for

Milan

Before Saturday's match against Cagliari, Giroud has pushed Milan to the top of

Serie A

, hitting the target eight times in 20 fixtures.

Evaluating Giroud, Deschamps said:

"It's going well for him at the moment. He's scoring important goals with Milan. I'm happy for him.

"I've got decisions to make. I know what Olivier is capable of doing with us. He remains available to France even if I haven't called him up for this get-together."

But now, eight months before the World Cup in Qatar, Giroud enters the scene once more.

On March 25, France will face Ivory Coast in Marseille, and four days later, South Africa in Lille.
