CONMEBOL joins UEFA against FIFA's two-year world cup proposal

After UEFA, CONMEBOL, the South American football federation, has spoken out against FIFA President Gianni Infantino's plan for a World Cup every two years.

Infantino

's stance on the project, which has gotten little support, will be severely harmed by this latest move against it.

CONMEBOL

issued a statement this evening saying that holding a World Cup every two years would

"distort the most important football competition on the planet, lowering its quality and undermining its exclusive character and its current demanding standards."

CONMEBOL confirms that they had previously backed this notion but that following a technical examination and discussions with South American football authorities, they have determined that it is "highly unviable."

As a result, the South American confederation has reaffirmed its endorsement for the present World Cup concept, which takes place every four years.

Club organizations, individual top leagues, and, of course, UEFA have all expressed opposition to the World Cup being held every two years.
