‘Messi wanted me to join Barcelona’, says Cristian Romero

Former Atalanta defender Cristian Romero admitted that the former Barcelona captain Lionel Messi wanted him to join the Catalan club before his shock move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentinean defender was linked with a move to

Barcelona

but he ended up signing for

Tottenham Hotspur

for €55 million.

Romero

and

Messi

were part of the Argentina squad that won the Copa America in Brazil in July.

In an interview with Radio AM 550, the youngster revealed that the 34-year-old asked him to leave Serie A side

Atalanta

and sign for Barca.

“It’s impressive to think that Messi wanted me to join Barcelona and become his teammate,”

said Romero

.

“It’s crazy the team they put together at PSG. I’m a little sad about how Leo left Barcelona, I thought he would have stayed at Barcelona forever.

“I wish him the best, he is an excellent person and hopefully, we’ll win everything along with the other Argentineans who are there.”

The 23-year-old had signed for La Dea on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy for €16m from Juventus last year.
