Wolves set to appoint Bruno Lage as new manager
Bruno Lage is set to be announced as Wolverhampton’s new head coach in the upcoming days after he was granted a work permit to work in England.
The 45-year-old initially failed to pass regulations brought by Brexit, but Wolves were finalizing the contracts and work permits on Wednesday for Lage's backroom staff with an official announcement expected in the coming days once these issues are concluded.
Lage
was the club's first choice following the departure of
Nuno Espirito Santo
from Molineux by mutual consent last month.
The 45-year-old flew to London for talks with Wolves' chairman
Jeff Shi
and technical director
Scott Sellars
last week to begin negotiations over joining the club.
He previously spent 18 months at
Benficain Portugal’s top flight and won the title in his first season ahead of
Porto.
He was voted the Primeira Liga’s best coach for 2018/19, too, but he was let go last summer following a run of two wins in 13 matches.
Nuno
decided to part ways with Wolves after four successful seasons with the Midlands club during which he oversaw a Championship title win in his first season before back-to-back seventh-placed finishes in the Premier League, along with runs to the FA Cup semi-finals and Europa League quarter-finals.
But a 13th-placed finish and poor form in 2020/21 saw him leave the club by mutual agreement shortly before their final game of the season against
Manchester United.
The 47-year-old, meanwhile, is entering talks with
Evertonand is currently the leading candidate to replace
Carlo Ancelotti
at Goodison Park.
