UK government negotiating to move Champions League final to England
In an all-English Champions League final, Manchester City and Chelsea are scheduled to face off in the showpiece fixture on May 29 in Istanbul.
As the United Kingdom has placed Turkey on its country's travel "red list", the Champions League’s final’s venue is in doubt.
Although UEFA insists they’ll remain committed to staging the game in Istanbul, the country will be under coronavirus lockdown until May 17.
There were controversies on the EFL’s necessary act, as three Championship play-off finals will be played on the same day as Champions League’s final.
However, reports suggest that the EFL is open to clear the day to host the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium.
The United Kingdom’s government minister, Michael Gove, told
Sky News: "There are delicate negotiations that are going on at the moment.
"My friend, my colleague, the culture secretary Oliver Dowden, is talking to people about this at the moment, and so I don't want to cut across that.
"I'm sure that fans in the UK would dearly love to see the final played here in the UK."
Turkey will be on the government’s ‘red list until May 17 and will not be reviewed for three weeks, and the future of the Champions League’s final is yet to be decided.
