Bernd Leno: Arsenal's defeat to Olympiacos 'was a warning'

The German stopper believes their defeat to the Greek side should be a warning sign to the Gunners and despite their qualification to the next round they need to take matters more into their hands.

Bernd Leno

insists that their defeat to

Olympiacos

in the Europa League competition should not affect their upcoming games, otherwise

Arsenal

will be left with nothing by the end of the season.

Considering that the Gunners currently sit 10th in the

Premier League

table, achieving Europa League glory will allow them to qualify to the next Champions League competition, but Leno believes if they continue with their current performance, European football will be nothing but a long lost dream to them.

Arsenal owed their Thursday qualification to their 3-1 win in the firs-leg after their 1-0 defeat to Olympiacos in the second-leg.

Talking about their performance after the game, Leno told the reporters:

“We need to be 100 per cent every game. If we play like today then we won’t reach anything this season.”

“I think we suffered and it was not necessary. I think because in the first 15 or 20 minutes we controlled the game, but then we’ve made too many easy mistakes and in the second half we conceded the goal and then everybody was nervous.”

“We made it hard for ourselves and, like I said, it was not necessary. In the dressing room it was quiet because everybody knows that it was not a good performance from us. We cannot change it anymore but the positive thing is that it was a warning.”

Despite Arsenal being one of the favorites to win the European title they still have a lot of strong competition in their race to the Europa League glory.

The remaining squads competing for the trophy are

Manchester United

,

Roma

,

Ajax

,

Granada

,

Villarreal

,

Dinamo Zagreb

,

Tottenham

, and

Slavia Prague

.

In 2019, Arsenal were qualified to the final but failed to win the trophy, still Leno believes that with the right approach and the

“perfect”

performance anything is possible.

“I think there are only very good teams in the quarter-finals and we need two perfect games to go to the semi-finals and two more games to go to the final. This is our target,”

he continued.

“The Europa League is very important for us. This is probably the closest way to go to the Champions League and also to win a big European trophy so we need to step up.”

“We need to have the motivation to win every game, cut out the easy mistakes and go through to the final and hopefully have a big final at the end of the season.”
